Energy Saving Vs Cost

According to Energy Star; “If all computers sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified, the savings would grow to: more than $1 billion in annual energy costs per year

Approximately 15 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the emissions from more than 1.4 million vehicles.”

The figures stated above, show a significant potential increase for energy saving and greenhouse gas emissions. These numbers have the potential of drastically improving the environment and of better utilizing natural world resources.

I have listed an example with two of my own computers below.

  1. ASUS X5536 – Energy Star – HDMI – 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Du0 – 6Gb Memory – Windows Operating System. This laptop was purchased in November of 2015. The second computer is B: APPLE MacBook – OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Running on 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 6 GB of memory. This laptop was purchased in 2009.

Findings:

Computer A & B appear to run at an equal speed with no problems.

Computer A cost: $250.00 Computer B cost: $978.00

Computer A & B both go into battery saving mode based upon the different options available in accordance with the preference of each user.

Computer A & B both have an internal fan which prevent the computer from going into overheating mode.

Computer A & B can both be shut down remotely.

Computer A’s battery lasts twice as long as Computer B’s battery however rather than this being a result of energy star vs regular, I believe it is a general issue with Apple Computers.

Computer B is capable of running more programs at the same time without freezing or slowing down the computer. This is not the case with Computer A.

Ideally, the settings in each computer are adjusted for the purpose of saving energy. Ways to do that may include but are not limited to the following:

Program the computer monitors to fall asleep after 5 minutes, or so of inactivity.

Lower the brightness of the screen

Program the computer to log out after a certain period of inactivity. This will prevent programs in the background to continue running.

Close out of all programs that are running in the background yet not being used.

Run frequent malware checks to ensure that there aren’t malicious programs running in the background.

You be the judge! Do you think that energy saving electronics, are worth the investment?

Who owns the internet?

You may be surprised that there is no single person “in charge” of the global interconnected network of computer networks known as the Internet. Instead, Internet infrastructure standards are overseen by groups such as the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Internet Architecture Board. The IETF is the principal body engaged in the development of new Internet protocol standard specifications. It is an open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. The actual technical work of the IETF is completed in its working groups.

Pro’s and con’s:

The internet allows for a diverse place. Due to the fact that it is a globally distributed network, the internet is composed of ideas, thoughts and creations resulting from the collaboration of many different individuals with many different beliefs and backgrounds.

Because the internet is created and composed by multi-races and multi-ethnic societies, the world has access to much more information and history from almost anywhere in the world.

The internet allows for world-wide relations and communications as it is composed of international working groups.

Having such a wide range of international working groups, may at times cause a conflict of interest or a conflict in communications.

The creation of internet protocols may be ambiguous as they are not created by a

unanimous decision but rather as an independent one.

Who Has Rights to a Domain Name?

Did you know that cyber squatters buy and register unused or lapsed domain names so that they can profit from selling them? Cyber squatters sometimes will sell you the domain name, but some take advantage of people trying to reach a more popular website and redirect to a website for their own business.

Website owners periodically must renew domain name registrations. Cyber squatters look for out-of-date registrations and buy them so that the original website owner must buy them back. Cyber squatters may purchase domain names with common words, alternate spellings of trademarked terms, or celebrity names.

More than 10 years ago, lawmakers enacted the Ant Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act The ACPA’s goal is to protect trademark owners from being forced to pay a cyber squatter for a domain name that includes their trademark. To win a case against a cyber squatter, you must prove that the cyber squatter acted in bad faith, meaning they tried knowingly to profit from purchasing a domain name with a trademarked term.

How photography and videography impacted the world in negative ways.

While there are many advantages to video and photography, and thanks to these, technology has evolved in many positive ways, there are also many dangers associated with the aforementioned. As many people know, social media today, revolves around imagery and videography. People have the opportunity to share every day meaningful (or non-meaningful) life events. Having the opportunity to capture and share significant moments with friends and loved ones, is an invaluable opportunity in today’s world.

On the same token, much damage can be done with the improper use of photos and videos. Many of the events revolved around cyberbullying, part from the idea of misuse of this information. Furthermore, the impersonation of other people, is quite a popular process in social media sites, such as: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Needless to say, it can also very damaging and destructive to the image and character of a person.

Photography and videography, are not only used for online social media purposes. Today, the government, private organizations, and local institutions, use these for marketing, advertisement, and logistical purposes. Many countries, are beginning to use technology as a tool to aide in war zones. Small robotic tanks armed with missiles, have already been tested by armies of various countries. While this minimizes the amount of soldiers that are put on the front line, several trials have shown that this equipment is not reliable nor safety proof. Many of these machines, have auto-deployed, thus killing our own soldiers as a result of error.

Technological advances such as robots and drones in the military, have many advantages and disadvantages to the current and future welfare of our country. While theses devices have the potential of saving the lives of many of the soldiers who are fighting for our country, and allow for an intelligent operation approach, the downfall of their nature, appear to be much more severe than the advantages of such.

When looking at this matter from a social, ethical, and moral perspective, military drones and robots are basically killing machines. As P.W. Singer suggests, an electronic device cannot be programmed to know the difference between an enemy and al elder person, nor to have feelings to help determine that a death was unjustifiable. For this reason, the drone or robot will not feel remorse, thus having the capability of killing many innocent people to include children and women. Furthermore, because a drone cannot be prosecuted, once a mistake is being repeated over and over, it simply becomes a matter of a recall and of introducing a replacement.

In addition, while robots and drones have the capability of saving money, manpower, time, and resources, they are also a very dangerous tool to have. As some studies have revealed, people who operate the drones, are most likely to develop insensitivity to killing, or in severe circumstances, mental disturbances such as PTSD. The speaker poses an interesting comparison to video games, where players are much more likely to carry out severe and gruesome brutality acts through a game than in real life. Drones & robots however, while not a game, they will allow the same experience through an indirect and behind the scenes action.

Our world and newer generations are becoming much more insensitive to pain, problems, grief, feelings, etc. and while technology may allow us to advance in many ways, drones and robots can very easily cause a much more insensitive planet, where killing and war are the drive and center of our lives.

For the above reasons, technological advances continue to pose a threat to our society and world in many ways. While there are many advantages to some of these advances as stated above, mankind can at times, take these to extremes that endanger our own species. When men take life and creation to the point of acting as Gods, only death and devastation can occur as a result.

It is imperative, that social media, technology, photography, and videography, are used with utmost responsibility. Our obligation as part of this society, is to respect life and dignity in every possible way. The insensitivity of youth these days, and the ambition for economic power and social status, can be blinding to many people these days, and cause them to misuse information in devastating ways.

The proper use of social media, can bring about many positive results and has the potential of bringing our community together in useful ways. Many organizations and people, already have established great causes for the benefit of those who are less fortunate. The reuniting of missing people, fund collection for illness, or poverty causes, advertisement of blood drives, amber alerts, etc. are all good examples of constructive ways in which technology, social media, photography, and videography can be used, to make this world a better, stronger, dignified, and value oriented place.

What Is Success

My peeps! Wanna give you a quick run-through on what I’ve been up to.

I’ve been going to entrepreneurship events all of Virginia for the past week, following one of my good friends’.My long time pal Melvin, he has been a true inspiration. A man, who used to be a photographer starting back in the 70’s and has recently opened a photo booth company in Richmond. Check out his web page: http://www.photoboothrichmondva.com if you’ve considered hiring a photo booth for an event in the area. His company had it redone very recently and according to him it looks better that anyone else’s page.

A little background on Mel. He is the type of guy who is all about work and getting stuff done, while not being an actual workaholic. Continue reading “What Is Success”

Long time no see.

Hi everyone, I’ve been out on another adventure of mine. No much time to blog away due to the lack of cell phone reception and internet access.

It’s been a crazy month for me and I want to share it with everyone here.

Everything started with a routine trip to my family doctor for an annual checkup. No big deal right? I didn’t think much of it and got it over with. So, about 3 weeks later, Doc. Jacob (his name is) calls to inform me that I have some strange cell growth and activity going on within my body. Supposedly he looked at the results from the previous years and compared them to the one i just did. So, he suggests that i come in right away for more testing. Me being me, i haven’t had much to do other than blogging away and watching movies on Netflix. Continue reading “Long time no see.”

Lacoste and Polo all the way

The Everyday Struggle.

Hi there,

Something I felt like getting off my chest since the other day, when I was taking care of business in my Japanese style bathroom where the only thing that is warm is the toilet seat… There are only three things in the whole house producing heat which are: the kerosene heater (one of my favorite devices in the winter months), my toilet seat both upstairs and downstairs and, well, my rapidly beating heart… So let me tell you more about my wonderful heater… As long as it is full of kerosene I love it, otherwise it might just be the most useless thing in the whole wide world. The point of it is to keep you warm right? Well, once it runs out of fuel, (which we obviously store outside in the cold that we are trying to avoid), it’s pretty much “the suck” from there. You have to get the can from the inside of the heater, suit up, go outside and start the filling process… I must say, it has become much easier to refill it, ever since my wonderful wife bought this fabulous, battery operated pump for about 10 bucks in Yen, which I was too cheap to purchase.

Anyways, where was I… Oh, yeah, the filling process, well, first step as I have already described is to go outside, it’s like taking a leap of faith in a way and hoping that you don’t freeze… Once I’m out there in the cold, I go around the corner of my house and grab one of the 5 gallon canisters of kerosene and pray that it’s full.. Then I set them side by side, stick the sucking end of the pump into the canister and the other end into this awesome aluminum container which came out of the heater… Once I flip the switch, this beautifully engineered machine starts transferring the kerosene, at which point I’m just standing and waiting for it to fill up…This brings back the memories of our first winter here, the struggle was real! In an attempt to save some money on the pump I, being the smart man that I have decided to purchase a funnel for about 50 cents at a home store… Little did I know the funnel could only take so much before it got overfilled and the rest of the fuel would just spill all over the ground… I also, didn’t consider that a completely full jug of kerosene would not be very user friendly when time came to pour the fuel into the funnel.. It was a disaster.. So, these days I just wait for the canister to fill up. Once it’s full,  first I get the pump out of the fuel and shake it off for about 10 seconds, then I stick it in the bag so it doesn’t get dirty… By the way, whenever the winter is over, it gets dirty anyways and is quite the nice home for the spiders until the next January. Got carried away again… I wrap everything up, bring the canister back into the room and place it carefully into the heater. Then it pretty self explanatory… Just push a button, it fires up, spits up some nasty smoke and whoala! The heat from that thing is no comparison to the electric heaters in the house, but the constant refilling gets old.

So, I have some things to say about the toilet seats.. THEY ARE AWESOME! They remind me of heated seats in luxury cars like Lexus and Benz which are super expensive. You will only get those in the most luxurious cars and sometimes limousines. As a matter of fact, last time I sat my butt in a heated seat was in a limo back in Richmond,VA! I clearly remember the awesome feeling… It was winter, I lost my jacket that night, so all I had to wear was a dress shirt, silky pants and polished shoes with thin socks. As you might guess, I was freezing as soon as me and my company stepped out the door, but guess what? As we walked up to the side of the road, our shine white limo pulled up, we hopped inside and melted away in those amazing heated seats. Continue reading “Lacoste and Polo all the way”
